Our Living the Mission Awards

IEHP’s Living the Mission Awards honor providers, community partners, and entities whose actions and contributions embody IEHP’s Mission, Vision and Values. The nomination window opens each year from the first of December through mid-February.

Four different Living the Mission Awards are conferred each year at the IEHP Annual Mission Conference in May.

Award Categories (Expand for More Details):

This award honors a Provider, entity, or Community Partner that exemplifies IEHP’s Mission, “We heal and inspire the human spirit.” This is demonstrated by:

  • Having compassion that extends to all the people they serve
  • Investing time and energy in their community through acts of service
  • Inspiring and motivating others to serve and to be their best
  • Being a servant-leader that others want to follow and emulate

This award honors a Provider, entity, or Community Partner that exemplifies engagement with the well-being and joyful life of the residents of the Inland Empire. This is demonstrated by:

  • Passionate participation in raising awareness of and reducing the social determinants of ill-health
  • Actively supporting core individual and community needs such as food security, shelter and safety
  • Working to ensure health and well-being are equitably experienced across our diverse communities

This award honors a Provider or entity that exemplifies world-class care and outcomes in preventive care, chronic care or hospital care. This includes clinical outcome data review and Member’s experience data review. This is demonstrated by:

  • Clinical care and outcomes that exceed national benchmarks and consistently follow best practice
  • Care that is seamlessly coordinated from prevention – across the whole care continuum
  • Care that is built on cultural humility and respectful, holistic, human-centered experiences

This award honors a Provider, entity, or Community Partner that exemplifies the courage to “break the mold” in pursuit of innovative ways to address the health concerns of the residents of the Inland Empire. This is demonstrated by:

  • Daring to experiment and do something to truly shift the paradigm
  • Innovating to improve care for our communities

Adimika Arthur is a visionary and strategic executive who has spent over two decades in healthcare and whose research experience in health equity, investments and disruptive technologies provides companies insights while competing in a rapidly shifting market. Mrs. Arthur is well versed in transforming business use cases and leveraging partnerships in complex domestic and global regulatory environments.

Ira Byock, MD, FAAHPM

Palliative Care Physician and Founder of the Institute of Human Caring

Ira Byock, MD, FAAHPM is a leading medical authority, author, and public advocate for improving care for people living with serious medical conditions.

Dr. Byock is an active emeritus professor of medicine and community & family medicine at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine.

Leslie Cotter, MD

Psychiatrist and Founder of Young Women Empowered

Leslie is a group facilitator, trainer, executive coach, psychiatrist and psychotherapist. She co-founded Young Women Empowered, a Seattle-based nonprofit that centers the needs of young women of color, and she served as board president for eight years. As a coach, Leslie works with individuals and teams who want to find deeper meaning and effectiveness in their personal and professional lives.

Leslie Cotter, MD

Psychiatrist and Founder of Young Women Empowered

Bio:

Leslie is a group facilitator, trainer, executive coach, psychiatrist and psychotherapist. She co-founded Young Women Empowered, a Seattle-based nonprofit that centers the needs of young women of color, and she served as board president for eight years. As a coach Leslie works with individuals and teams who want to find deeper meaning and effectiveness in their personal and professional lives. She works with corporate teams, healthcare professionals, teachers, youth workers, young people plus more. As a psychiatrist, Leslie works with a range of clients from people wanting to improve their lives to people living with serious mental illness.

Leslie has held associate professorships at the University of British Columbia and McMaster University (Ontario). In 2005 she trained as an Executive Coach at Breakthrough Enterprises in San Rafael, California. She trained in facilitation with Partners for Youth Empowerment and is a member of their international facilitation team.

Leslie is passionate about helping people bring forth their innate gifts and talents. She has a firm belief in people’s capacity to find their own solutions. She combines her psychiatric skills with a positive coaching approach and a warm and empowering leadership style. Leslie has extensive experience working with people from all walks of life and a deep interest in what makes people and organizations tick.

Ira Byock, MD, FAAHPM

Palliative Care Physician and Founder of the Institute of Human Caring

Bio:

Ira Byock, MD, FAAHPM is a leading medical authority, author, and public advocate for improving care for people living with serious medical conditions.

Dr. Byock is an active emeritus professor of medicine and community & family medicine at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine.

Dr. Byock has been involved in hospice and palliative care since 1978. He is a past president of the Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. From 1996 to 2006, Dr. Byock directed a national grant project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that developed prototypes for concurrent palliative care within mainstream health care. From 2003 to 2013, he led the Section of Palliative Care within the the Dartmouth Health system based in New Hampshire.

In 2014, Dr. Byock founded the Institute for Human Caring within the multi-state Providence health system. The Institute drives transformation to make caring for whole persons the new normal. The Institute’s change strategies produce measurable and scalable improvements in health care quality and efficiency. Since leaving his position with the Institute in 2022, Dr. Byock is the Principal Consultant for Clinical Transformation Specialists, PLLC, which advances highly personalized care as a values strategy for American healthcare.

Dr. Byock has authored numerous articles in academic journals. His research has contributed to conceptual frameworks for the lived experience of illness; measures for subjective quality of life; and counseling methods for life completion and wellbeing. His first book, Dying Well became a standard in the field of hospice and palliative care. The Four Things That Matter Most is widely used in counseling within palliative care, pastoral care, and psychology. The Best Care Possible presents the potential for health care transformation. Dr. Byock lectures nationally and internationally.

Bio:

Adimika Arthur is a visionary and strategic executive who has spent over two decades in healthcare and whose research experience in health equity, investments and disruptive technologies provides companies insights while competing in a rapidly shifting market. Mrs. Arthur is well versed in transforming business use cases and leveraging partnerships in complex domestic and global regulatory environments. She works cross-functionally across all disciplines to help foster creative and customer-responsive solutions to the biggest challenges and to deliver meaningful and quantifiable results. She inspires high-growth companies ranging from early-stage start-ups, public and privately held payer and provider systems, policymakers and community leveraged non-profit and private models. Her career experience provides boards with a valuable understanding of innovations that impact how a company’s products, services and experiences will fare with the competition moving ahead.

Adimika Arthur is an experienced clinical epidemiologist and hospital/health system executive who loves to help people better understand health, wellbeing and healthcare through storytelling, connection and culture. She uniquely brings her population health focus on improving health and tech equity and access to quality care for vulnerable populations. She serves as the founding Executive Director and CEO for Health Tech for Medicaid (HT4M). HT4M is a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting innovation in Medicaid, the nations’ largest insurer, and further improving the quality, equity and access to care for vulnerable populations, their families and communities. HT4M is radically changing the pace of innovation in Medicaid through innovative program service delivery, infrastructure/ecosystem development and issue/policy advocacy to facilitate cutting-edge forums and partnerships for entrepreneurs, payers, providers, policymakers, advocates, investors and the Medicaid community. HT4M sits at the intersection of where health equity and tech equity meet and is considered a mission-based market enabler that facilitates cross-sectoral, collaborative partnerships in health technology nationwide.

Mrs. Arthur has domain expertise in multiple levers of the technology and healthcare industries with expertise in convening investors, executives and boards to create shareholder and stakeholder value and optimized performance. Her proven healthcare executive skills, with a strong management track record, and leadership positions on many global private board of directors, including a Canadian modular solutions company, Fero International, and multiple advisory boards (clinical and non-clinical), always center in empathy as well as business acumen.

Mrs. Arthur is a mom of two boys, an active community volunteer and advocate for liberation of the outdoors for all to enjoy. She traverses hiking trails around the world, runs daily and enjoys learning about new cultures while traveling. She has an MPH from the University of Washington, a BS from Clark Atlanta University and studied at Boston University School of Medicine.
